How to read LRV for dark rooms

Short answer: In a dark room every color looks darker and grayer than its chip, so choose a color a step higher in LRV than you would elsewhere, often favoring a clean or slightly warm undertone. Alternatively, embrace the dark with a deep, saturated color that makes the room cozy on purpose. Mid-tone grays are the riskiest choice because they tend to look muddy.

Why dark rooms change color

A paint can only reflect the light it receives. LRV tells you the share of light reflected, so in a room with little light, a mid-LRV color has less to bounce around and reads dimmer. Indirect north light also tends to make colors look cooler.

Two strategies that work

Reading LRV on a dark-room shortlist

  • Compare finalists' LRVs. The higher one will read lighter, but check that its undertone doesn't go dingy.
  • Expect any color to look a little darker on the wall than on the chip.
  • Use a lighter ceiling and trim to bounce light. See ceiling color.
  • Sheen helps a little: an eggshell reflects more light than flat but shows more flaws.

FAQ

What LRV should I use in a dark room?
There is no fixed rule, but stepping up in LRV compared with what you'd use in a bright room is a common approach. Test, because undertone matters as much as the number.
Will white paint make a dark room brighter?
A high-LRV white reflects the most light, but in low light it can look gray. A slightly warm off-white often reads cleaner.
Is dark paint a mistake in a small dark room?
Not necessarily. A deep color used confidently can make a small room feel cozy and intentional.
