How to choose a ceiling paint color
Three approaches
| Approach | Effect | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Flat white | Bounces light, recedes | Most rooms, low ceilings |
| Wall color lightened, or the same color | Cohesive, soft, enveloping | Bedrooms, rooms with lots of corners |
| Darker or bold "fifth wall" | Lowers the visual height, dramatic | Tall rooms, dining rooms, powder rooms |
Picking the right white
A stark, cool white over warm walls can look blue; a creamy white over cool gray walls can look yellow. Match the undertone family (warm vs cool). Ceilings receive less direct light than walls, so they usually look a shade darker than the same paint on a wall.
Sheen
Flat is the standard ceiling finish because it hides flaws and doesn't glare. Benjamin Moore and Sherwin-Williams both list ceilings as a flat-paint use. Bathrooms and kitchens may call for more moisture- and grease-resistant products. See sheen by room.

FAQ
- Should the ceiling be lighter than the walls?
- Usually, because a lighter ceiling bounces light and feels higher. A same-color or darker ceiling is a deliberate style choice.
- Should ceilings be flat or matte?
- Flat is the most common recommendation for ceilings because it hides imperfections and avoids glare.
- Should I use ceiling white with my trim white?
- You can, if the undertones are compatible. Many people use one white for both, in different sheens.
